Dillon Reservoir Loop Guide

This scenic path provides stunning views of the Rocky Mountains towering above the shimmering lake beneath them. With this in mind, a ride around this pristine mountain lake will be sure to leave you with an unforgettable experience.

The loop does include a strenuous climb (about 500ft elevation gain) to the top Swan Mountain (9,500ft). Here, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the lake and the adjacent Gore and Tenmile mountain ranges. However, the climb and subsequent descent can be particularly demanding. For this reason, this section of trail is not recommended for recreational riders on path bikes in either direction.

Instead, your typical leisure rider may choose to take an E-bike in the counterclockwise direction. By doing this, recreational riders can avoid close encounters with traffic while making the climb itself easier.

Another option would be to ride from one marina to the other. Choosing this route will allow you to avoid Swan Mountain all together. You’ll bypass any major ups and downs while still enjoying fantastic views. The ride from marina to marina is 6 miles so riders can expect a 12 mile out and back trip. The best views of the mountains can be found while crossing the dam.

Counter-Clockwise Loop (recommended) Clockwise Loop (preferred for experienced road bikers)
  • Ride up on road (4ft shoulder)
  • Descend on bikes path
  • Not recommended for recreational riders on path bikes (steep climb)
  • Ride up recpath
  • Descend with traffic
  • Not recommended for anyone not an advanced road bike rider

Frisco: more sunny days than Miami; ideal summer temps 60-78

At the heart of Summit County, Main Street Frisco is filled with action. Nonetheless, a laid-back charm, small-town feel and splashes of century old history remain in the lakeside community. Great weather here makes it a perfect spot for outdoor festivals and block parties, with one nearly every summer weekend. Bicyclists and summer adventurers who have had their fill of sunshine and fresh mountain air can escape to dine at one of the 30 eateries in restaurant row or wander in and out of Main Street’s quaint boutiques and shops.

Frisco to Lake Dillon

Rent a bike in Frisco and ride from Frisco to Lake Dillon. Easily one of the country’s most beautiful rides with flowers and wildlife abound where the path rolls through marshes and pine-forested coves. The 18 mile round trip makes just a 475 foot vertical gain from Frisco, so it’s fairly easy and level. Starting points are found along Frisco’s Summit Boulevard (Highway 9).

At 9,000 feet, Lake Dillon’s yacht club is the highest club in North America. You can dismount from your trusty steed and rent a sailboat or powerboat. Catch brown or rainbow trout from a secluded spot along the Lake’s 26 miles of shoreline. Or simply bask in the sun with a drink or snack at the Tiki Bar and just gaze at the sailboats gracefully cruising in the cool expanse of the Lake.
